Mom, Dad … Now Don’t Freak Out

All of this may be a moot point if your parents aren’t totally on board. More than one girl has told me that her mom and dad don’t want her to be friends with boys because it “always leads to something else.” Or that there isn’t any reason to have relationships with guys because they aren’t even close to marrying age. Then there are the parents — often dads — who say they trust their daughters, but they just don’t trust other people’s sons. They feel it’s better just not to go there and avoid all problems.

I’ll say this in every chapter: you are obligated to honor your parents’ final decisions. I would never advise you to go against their rules. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t ask to discuss their choices for you, and we’ve already talked in chapter one about how to approach that. Since the topic of guys-as-friends may be more of an issue for you than dating or sex, I think some specifics are in order.

Always lead off with something like:

“Can we just talk about this? I’m not going to argue, I promise.”

“I have a couple of questions — just some things I’m curious about.”

“What you guys say goes. I just need some clarification.”
